Context of the project
Electromobility is a fairly new concept in the transportation sector, involving the use of electric vehicles (cars, bicycles, etc.). These rechargeable vehicles are supplied with electricity via charging stations fed by the grid or by renewable energy production facilities.
As part of its commitment to innovation and to improving the quality of mobility within the university and in the city, Ibn Tofail University has equipped itself with a parking lot photovoltaic shade housing an electromobility station.
Description of the project
The project consists of a grid-connected photovoltaic shade, with a total output of 21 KWp, equipped with charging stations for 10 electric power-assisted bicycles and 2 fully electric cars.
This is a leading project in Morocco and Africa, as it is the first on this scale to combine the photovoltaic self-consumption principle with that of electromobility.
In addition to providing shade for the vehicles it shelters, the shade structure also acts as a support for the photovoltaic panels.
The photovoltaic panels generate electrical energy, which is primarily used to power the charging stations for the electric power-assisted bicycles and, in the near future, the electric cars. The remaining energy is then re-injected in a controlled manner into the building closest to the station, that of the university presidency.
The bicycles can reach a speed of 25Km/h and have a battery range of 30 to 70Km, depending on the road condition and the weight of the user. Cars, on the other hand, can reach a speed of 130Km/h and have a battery range of 150Km.
Students, staff and teachers can access these electric vehicles via subscription cards. They can pick up the vehicle and return it to its spot, where it is automatically recharged.
The station management platform was upgraded in 2023, with a number of smart functionalities added.
. The electromobility station will be a platform for practical work and research for students and researchers.
. The adoption of the electromobility concept will make the university the national benchmark in this field.
. The station will enable the University to move towards the “SMART CITY” concept.
