Sustainability Literacy and Awareness Assessment

Ibn Tofail University has established a Sustainability Literacy and Awareness Assessment tool to systematically evaluate sustainability knowledge, behaviors, and engagement across both its staff, including professors, administrative personnel, and technicians, as well as its student community. Rather than treating sustainability as a theoretical concept, the university positions literacy as a measurable and evolving institutional competency.

The assessment is designed to capture not only what individuals know, but also how they act and how they perceive sustainability within their daily academic and professional environments. By examining knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes together, the university moves beyond awareness toward a more comprehensive understanding of how sustainability is internalized across the institution.

Structured around 30 questions, the tool provides a balanced evaluation of sustainability literacy. It explores understanding of environmental challenges, observes everyday practices such as resource use and waste management, and assesses the willingness to engage in sustainability initiatives. This integrated structure allows the university to generate a clear and realistic picture of sustainability engagement at different levels.

The assessment is deployed through the university’s digital platforms and is accessible to both staff and students. Crucially, the results are systematically analyzed, not only to measure current literacy levels but to directly inform decision-making. The findings are used to refine training programs, adjust awareness strategies, and align educational content with identified gaps, ensuring that actions are targeted and relevant.

By embedding this assessment into its institutional practices, Ibn Tofail University adopts a data-driven approach to sustainability, where evaluation leads to action. This continuous feedback loop strengthens sustainability literacy over time and supports the university’s broader alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to quality education, responsible consumption, and climate action.
